North Smithfield Little League Code of Conduct
Purpose
North Smithfield Little League (NSLL) is a proud member of the North Smithfield community dedicated to fostering a positive environment where youth can develop character, discipline, teamwork, and physical well-being. All participants, including players, coaches, parents, and spectators, are expected to uphold these values by following the NSLL Code of Conduct. This Code of Conduct applies to all NSLL events, activities, or performance of duties on behalf of the league.
General Code of Conduct
Respect and Sportsmanship: NSLL has zero tolerance for poor or negative attitudes. NSLL demands all participants must demonstrate respect for others, including officials, players, coaches, and spectators regardless of race, creed, color, gender, or ability. Unsportsmanlike conduct such as booing, taunting, or using profanity will not be tolerated.
Authority of Officials: Umpires have full authority over the game and should not be questioned. For issues outside the playing area, an NSLL Board Member will manage the situation, with the discretion to issue warnings or remove individuals from the premises if necessary.
Prohibited Actions: Physical or verbal abuse, offensive gestures, and any form of discrimination will result in immediate disciplinary action, including ejection from the facility or game.
Substance Use: The use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco is strictly prohibited at all NSLL facilities. Any violations will lead to immediate expulsion from the premises and potential further disciplinary action.
Parent and Spectator Code of Conduct
Parents play a crucial role in creating a supportive atmosphere for players. All parents and guests must agree to:
Encourage Enjoyment and Skill Development: Remember that sports are for fun and growth. Parents should prioritize the cohesion of the team and skill development of the players over winning. Parents will refrain from placing undue pressure on players, coaches, and officials.
Model Positive Behavior: Respect all players, coaches, officials, and spectators. Avoid unsportsmanlike behavior, such as arguing with officials, coaching from the sidelines, or engaging in hostile actions at any and all NSLL events.
Respect the Rules and Authority: Allow coaches and officials to manage the game without interference. If a concern arises, address it respectfully and privately at an appropriate time.
Coach and Volunteer Code of Conduct
Coaches and Volunteers are role models and must demonstrate exemplary behavior, including:
Be an Outstanding NSLL Representative: In all interactions you have with your team, their parents or guests, and the community, recognize that you are a representative of NSLL and that your conduct reflects upon the organization and the Board of Directors. Be mindful of this responsibility, remaining positive, productive, and respectful at all times.
Focus on Player Well-being: Place the players' emotional and physical health above all desires to win. Create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment that emphasizes teamwork and personal growth.
Respect for All: Treat each player as an individual and lead by example by showing respect for officials, opponents, and spectators. Foster a culture of fairness and fun. Avoid using offensive language and emphasize respect and sportsmanship.
Promote Player Development: Coaches shall do their best to organize and conduct practices that are fun and challenging. This includes meeting each player where they are at in their skill development and doing their best to promote the advancement of baseball skills and social and emotional growth as a member of the North Smithfield Community.
Compliance with League Policies: Ensure all team members follow league policies and regulations. Any coach that knowingly circumvents league rules or demonstrates unsportsmanlike behavior will be subject to disciplinary action. Coaches are also responsible for returning all equipment and paperwork in a timely manner upon request.
Player Code of Conduct
Players are expected to adhere to the following principles:
Respect and Responsibility: Show respect to coaches, officials, and opponents. Attend practices and games or make every effort to contact your coach(es) to notify them of your absence. Arrive on time and give full effort at practices and games. Conduct yourself with honor and dignity. Be accountable for your effort and your behavior.
Sportsmanship: Celebrate both wins and losses with grace. Congratulate opponents, avoid confrontations, and refrain from any unsportsmanlike conduct such as unfriendly language or insults, violence, or throwing equipment.
Commitment to the Team: Support teammates, participate in all team activities, and work hard to improve skills.
Ejections and Disciplinary Actions
The NSLL Board of Directors retains the sole authority to determine what, if any, disciplinary actions are appropriate for any violations of this Code of Conduct.
Disciplinary actions may include: Verbal or written warnings, game or season suspensions, and permanent expulsion from all NSLL activities for repeated or serious infractions.
Any ejection will result in an immediate suspension from the current game and the next game. Continued violations will lead to further penalties, which may include expulsion from the league.
All disciplinary decisions are at the discretion of the NSLL Board of Directors and are final. The Board retains the authority to assess the severity of infractions and determine appropriate actions.
By participating in NSLL, all members agree to uphold this Code of Conduct, ensuring a positive, safe, and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
